Claude vs Gemini compared for real work: models, plans, agents, Workspace integration and a decision table that tells you which one to put on your team's desks.

Claude vs Gemini is the comparison I get asked about most in corporate training rooms, usually by someone whose company already pays for Google Workspace and whose best marketer keeps expensing a Claude subscription. Both are frontier assistants from serious labs. Both write, analyse, code and run agents. Picking one on vibes wastes money.

The useful question isn't "which model is smarter this month," because that ranking flips with every release. It's "which one disappears into the work my team already does." This comparison answers that with the current lineups, the plans, and a decision table you can take to a budget meeting.

Claude vs Gemini: the short answer

If this is true for youPick
Your company runs on Gmail, Docs, Drive and MeetGemini
You need AI answers inside Google SearchGemini
You generate a lot of images, video and musicGemini
Your work is long documents, briefs and analysisClaude
You want agents that follow written company rulesClaude
Your team writes code or automates workflowsClaude
You need one assistant for 500 non-technical staffGemini
You need ten people to build internal AI toolsClaude

If both columns describe you, buy both. The combined cost of a Google AI plan and a handful of Claude seats is less than one junior hire, and the split is how most of my clients settle after three months.

The current model lineups

Anthropic's pricing page lists four models: Fable 5.1 for long-running agent work, Opus 5 for complex agentic coding and enterprise tasks, Sonnet 5 as the high-performance default, and Haiku 4.5 as the fast, cheap one. Free accounts get Sonnet and Haiku; Pro and Max unlock Opus and limited Fable.

Google's AI plans put Gemini 3.1 Pro at the centre, with Deep Research, Deep Think reasoning on the top tier, and a family of surrounding products: Gemini in Gmail, Gemini Notebook, Jules for coding tasks, Antigravity, and image, music and video generation.

Notice the shape of each offer. Anthropic sells a ladder of models. Google sells a ladder of access to one model family plus a bundle of adjacent products. That difference explains almost everything about who should buy which.

Where Gemini wins

It is already where your people work. Gemini sits in Gmail, Docs and Drive. Nobody has to copy a document into a chat window. For a 200-person company where AI adoption is the actual problem, removing that copy-paste step beats a smarter model nobody opens.

Search. Gemini powers AI Mode in Google Search, which is where most non-technical staff first meet AI without knowing it.

Media generation. Image, video and music generation come inside the subscription rather than as separate tools with separate invoices, which matters for social teams.

The bundle. Higher tiers include cloud storage, YouTube Premium Lite and Google Home features. If you already pay for those, the AI is partly free.

Where Claude wins

Instruction fidelity on long work. Give Claude a 40-page brand book and a brief, and it holds the rules to the end of the document. This is the single most common reason my clients keep Claude seats after the pilot.

Agentic depth. Claude Code, Claude Skills and subagents let you encode how your company does a task once and re-run it forever. Gemini has coding agents too; Claude's are what non-engineers end up using.

Connecting your own systems. MCP started at Anthropic and the server ecosystem there is deep. See best MCP servers for what that unlocks in practice.

Reusable containers of work. Claude Projects and artifacts turn one good prompt into a team asset instead of a message somebody has to find again.

Claude vs Gemini for marketing teams

I run AI training for marketing teams, so this is the split I see weekly:

  • Daily drafting, replies, meeting notes: Gemini, because it is in the inbox.
  • Campaign briefs, positioning, long-form content: Claude, because it holds the brief.
  • Visual assets for social: Gemini, because generation is bundled.
  • Repeatable systems (weekly reports, SEO pipelines, content QA): Claude, because Skills and Projects make them repeatable.

If you only get one, ask a blunt question: is your bottleneck adoption or depth? Adoption problems are solved by the tool already installed. Depth problems are solved by the tool that follows instructions for 20 pages.

What neither of them fixes

Switching assistants will not fix a team with no process. Both tools amplify what you already have written down. Companies that keep their rules, tone and offers in one place get good output from either model; companies that keep it in people's heads get generic output from both. That is why I start trainings with the AI literacy layer before anyone touches a model picker.

A 30-day test that settles the argument

  1. Week 1: pick three recurring tasks with a clear output (a weekly report, a campaign brief, a customer email sequence).
  2. Week 2: run each task in both tools with the exact same input, and save both outputs.
  3. Week 3: have the person who owns the task rank the outputs blind, without knowing which model produced which.
  4. Week 4: count edits. The tool that needs fewer edits per 1,000 words wins your budget, regardless of benchmarks.

Four weeks of real tasks beats four hours of reading comparisons, including this one.

The verdict

Gemini is the better company purchase: one subscription, everyone covered, AI where the work already happens. Claude is the better builder purchase: the people who make campaigns, systems and automations get further with it, and their output compounds.

If you want help running that 30-day test with your own team's tasks, that's exactly what my AI training packages do. And if you're still deciding between assistants more broadly, Claude vs ChatGPT covers the other half of this question.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude better than Gemini?

Neither is universally better. Claude tends to hold instructions and long documents more faithfully, which matters for briefs, SOPs and agent work. Gemini is stronger when you want AI attached to Gmail, Docs, Drive and Google Search, and when you need generous multimodal generation inside one subscription.

Which is cheaper, Claude or Gemini?

Entry paid tiers are close: Claude Pro is $20 a month and Google's mid AI plan sits in the same range, but Google bundles cloud storage, YouTube Premium Lite and media generation, so the effective value depends on whether you already pay for those.

Can I use Claude and Gemini together?

Yes, and most teams do. A common split is Gemini as the default assistant for everyone in Workspace, and Claude seats for marketing, ops and engineering, where longer context and agentic work pay for themselves.

Which one is better for marketing teams?

For drafting inside Docs and Gmail, Gemini removes friction. For campaign systems, brand rules, repeatable skills and multi-step automations, Claude is the one my clients keep after the trial ends.
