Claude for Small Business: What It Does and How to Set It Up
Claude for Small Business explained: the 15 workflows, the tools it connects to, which plan you need and how to set it up safely in Claude Cowork.

Claude for Small Business is Anthropic's attempt to make AI useful for owners who don't have time to design workflows. You switch it on inside Claude Cowork, connect the tools you already run the business on, and pick a job such as chasing invoices or preparing the month-end close. Claude does the work and you approve it.
I've set it up with several small teams. Here's what it includes, what you need and how to set it up without handing an AI the keys to your bank account on day one.
What is Claude for Small Business?
Anthropic announced Claude for Small Business on May 13, 2026. It's a toggle install inside Claude Cowork, the Claude mode that completes multi-step tasks on your files and tools.
The package has two parts:
- 15 ready-to-run agentic workflows across finance, operations, sales, marketing, HR and customer service.
- 15 skills built around repeatable tasks small business owners identified, which Claude uses whenever a request matches. If skills are new to you, read Claude skills.
The workflow Anthropic describes is simple: turn it on, connect your tools, choose the job, and Claude executes with your approval.
The 15 workflows and what they cover
According to Anthropic's announcement, the workflows include:
- Finance: payroll planning, monthly close and reconciliation, margin analysis, organizing tax documents, chasing overdue invoices.
- Operations: business pulse reporting that pulls numbers from connected tools into one view.
- Sales and marketing: lead triage, campaign management and content strategy.
- Legal and HR: contract review and people-related paperwork.
The value isn't any single workflow. It's that someone already designed the steps, so you start from a working process instead of a blank prompt.
Which tools it connects to
Anthropic lists connections to:
| Area | Tools |
|---|---|
| Accounting and payments | Intuit QuickBooks, PayPal |
| CRM and marketing | HubSpot, Canva |
| Contracts | Docusign |
| Documents and email | Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 |

What you need: plans and setup
Cowork requires a paid Claude plan. Per Anthropic's pricing page:
| Plan | Price | Fit |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | $20/month, or $17/month billed annually | Solo owners with light, weekly use |
| Max | From $100/month | Owners running several workflows every day |
| Team | $20/seat/month billed annually, $25 monthly | Businesses where staff share the work |
Agentic tasks use more of your limits than regular chat, so an owner running daily reconciliations will feel the difference between Pro and Max. For the full plan breakdown, see Claude Code pricing.
Setting it up step by step
- Install the Claude Desktop app and sign in with a paid plan. Cowork tasks that touch local files need the desktop app open, per the Help Center.
- Write global instructions in Cowork settings: what the business does, who your customers are, currency, fiscal year and the things Claude must never do.
- Toggle on Claude for Small Business in Cowork.
- Connect one tool first. Start with the one you'll use for a read-only report, such as your accounting software.
- Run a reporting workflow, like the business pulse, and check every number against the source.
- Add tools and workflows one at a time, only after the previous one has been accurate for a couple of weeks.
Anthropic also offers a free on-demand course, AI Fluency for Small Businesses, which is worth the hour before you connect anything financial.
Guardrails before you let it touch money
- Keep approval on. Use Cowork's manual approval mode for any workflow that sends invoices, emails or payments.
- Read-only first. Reports and analysis before anything that writes to your systems.
- Check the math. Reconcile Claude's month-end numbers against your accountant's for at least one full cycle.
- Limit access. Connect the specific accounts and folders a workflow needs, not everything.
These are the same principles I cover in agentic AI vs generative AI: agents act, so the controls matter more than the prompts.
A first-week plan for owners
- Day 1: Write global instructions and connect your accounting tool with read-only use in mind.
- Day 2: Run the business pulse report and check every figure against your own numbers.
- Day 3: Run the overdue invoice workflow, but only to produce a list and draft reminders. Send nothing.
- Day 4: Connect your CRM and run lead triage on last week's inquiries. Compare its calls with yours.
- Day 5: Review what worked, fix the instructions that produced errors and pick one workflow to keep using weekly.
By the end of the week you'll know which workflows save real time for your business and which need more setup before you trust them.
Is Claude for Small Business worth it?
If you spend hours each month on invoices, reconciliation, reporting or lead follow-up, yes. The ready-made workflows remove the hardest part of adopting AI, which is designing the process.
It isn't worth it if nobody reviews the outputs. The owners who get value treat Claude like a capable new hire: clear instructions, limited access at first and regular checks.
If you want help setting it up for your business and training your team to run it, that's exactly what my AI training packages cover. For organizing the knowledge Claude works from, start with Claude Projects.
If you want someone to map where AI actually fits before you spend a month on it, that is exactly what an AI consultant for small business should do, and the audit is free.
